develop + design + build

107 S Main St

107 S Main St

Memphis, TN

The brick and timber structure at 107 S. Main St, built in 1910, originally housed the Hessig-Ellis Drug Company with a store on the ground floor, offices on the second floor, and storage on the third and fourth floors. After the company left the building it served other uses over the years, with its most recent iteration being a clothing store on the ground floor while the upper levels remained empty. Years of neglect led to a weakened structure and a roof collapse, leaving the building completely empty and hazardous.

cnct. design & development was enlisted to create a strategy for repairing and adaptively reusing the historic building for a ground floor restaurant and leasable office spaces on the upper levels. The design team’s strategic approach for preservation looked to balance an historic restoration with reactivating and reopening the façade to South Main Street Mall’s vibrant street life.
